The Round House, National Book Award Winner for Fiction, may prove to be the best and the most important book I will read in 2013. The story is riveting and tragic, by an author noted for her body of work about Native America. The Round House is important to me in a very personal way; my home is Shawnee, Oklahoma (Pottawatomie County), in a place originally settled by four Native American tribes. Erdich’s book reveals to me how very little I know about Native Americans’ past and present. I am challenged to learn more about her people’s experience including, but not limited to those nations located where I live.
