Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese

I heard about Cutting for Stone after it was published in 2009, but as is often the case, other books kept arriving at the top of my “Must Read NOW” list — a mistake. I could have, should have been reading this wonderful story, which left me breathless at the end, and will result in my pondering its insights and lessons for months to come. We recognize parts of ourselves in many of the characters here and understand a bit more of why we do what we do and how important what we neglect to do can become. We learn a bit about medicine, disease, and what it means to hold another’s life in your hands. And we learn what “cutting for stone” means. I am happy to know that the movie is coming. And I will be reminding myself to not expect too much, because I don’t think it can approach the beauty and truth of the novel.
